Storybook Land Canal Boats, Miniature boat ride in Disneyland, US
Storybook Land Canal Boats is a miniature boat ride at Disneyland that takes visitors through artificial waterways lined with small landscapes from animated films. The route winds around replicas of villages, castles, and scenes from different fairy tales.
The attraction opened in 1956 as a replacement for an earlier canal concept that operated for only two months in 1955. The new approach added fairy tale scenes and became part of Fantasyland.
The route passes handcrafted miniatures whose plants and trees are pruned to scale so they match the tiny houses and castles. Visitors see the windmill from the tale of Pinocchio and the castle from Sleeping Beauty, among other scenes.
Each boat accommodates up to 14 people and the ride lasts about 12 minutes through the waterways of Fantasyland. A tour guide on board narrates stories about the scenes during the journey.
Each boat carries the name of a female Disney character, except one named after Flower, the male skunk from Bambi. The miniature landscapes require regular pruning to keep the proportions right.
