Bahia Honda Key, Natural island in Florida Keys, United States.
Bahia Honda Key is an island in the Florida Keys featuring sandy beaches, coral reefs, and mangrove areas across its expanse. The state park today provides walking trails, swimming areas, and facilities for exploring the natural habitats that span the island.
The island was the site of a railroad built between 1905 and 1912 that connected the mainland to Key West across the water. The old Bahia Honda Bridge, a remaining structure from that era, still stands today and continues to serve the island.
The name Bahia Honda comes from Spanish and means deep bay, reflecting the natural deep-water channel at the western end that visitors can still observe today.
Access is by road from the mainland, and the park is open year-round with facilities available from early morning until sunset. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as shade is limited and the sun exposure can be intense.
The island contains a rare saltwater mangrove ecosystem with specialized plants and animals adapted to extreme conditions. These habitats are essential for breeding many tropical fish species and reveal the natural diversity that exists in this area.
