Little Torch Key, Residential island in Lower Keys, United States.
Little Torch Key is a residential island in the Lower Keys, positioned between Ramrod Key and Middle Torch Key along the Overseas Highway. The island has a narrow, linear shape with water access points and channels surrounding it.
A small settlement once existed on the northern part of the island but was abandoned in 1938. The relocation of the main highway caused this early community to decline.
The island's name comes from native torchwood trees that have grown here for centuries. These trees remain part of the local identity and natural character.
The island has boat ramps and trailer parking for water access to surrounding canals and bays. It is a quiet residential area without major visitor amenities, so plan accordingly.
The island is named after Amyris elemifera, a native tree with resinous wood that was historically used as fuel. This botanical feature gave the entire key group its name.
