University of Miami, Private university in Coral Gables, United States.
This private institution is a large campus in Coral Gables with tropical plants and palms, where Mediterranean-style buildings stand between lawns and walkways. Trees and shrubs grow everywhere providing shade, while courtyards, gardens and open squares organize the grounds and connect the different faculties.
It was founded in 1925 when Florida experienced a building boom, but just a year later a severe hurricane destroyed parts of the grounds and the crisis brought financial hardship. Despite this the institution grew over the decades into a larger college with several faculties and a steadily growing number of students and programs.
Students from around the world gather here and bring their languages and customs to campus, creating a lively international daily routine. In front of lecture halls, in cafeterias and between buildings you see groups studying together, talking or relaxing on the lawns as the rhythm between classes and breaks stretches throughout the day.
Visitors exploring the grounds can walk or cycle between buildings and find signs everywhere pointing to individual faculties and central facilities. The student area with large spaces for eating, studying and meeting is centrally located and accessible to guests as long as they follow house rules.
In a specialized research building you can see wind tunnels and equipment that simulate hurricane conditions and allow scientists to test how materials and structures behave in extreme weather. This facility combines teaching and practical research in a place that has itself been hit by storms and draws important lessons for coastal protection from that experience.
