Bayahibe, Coastal settlement in La Altagracia Province, Dominican Republic.
Bayahibe is a coastal settlement in La Altagracia Province on the eastern shore of the Dominican Republic. The village spreads across flat terrain with palm trees, leading to white sand beaches and providing direct access to the sea for local activities.
The settlement was founded in 1874 when Juan Brito and his family arrived from Puerto Rico and established themselves here. From these humble beginnings as a fishing village, it gradually became a center for marine tourism over the following decades.
The restaurants here serve fresh seafood using recipes passed down through fishing families over generations. These meals show how closely the community remains connected to the sea and how local traditions stay alive in daily cooking.
Daily boat trips depart from the main dock to nearby islands, with departures in the morning and returns in the afternoon. Visitors should expect uneven pathways and simple infrastructure typical of a small fishing community.
A rare pink-flowering cactus called the Bayahibe rose grows naturally in the dry woodlands surrounding the village. This plant is so closely tied to the place that it bears its name.
