Santa Cruz del Seibo, Municipal capital in El Seibo Province, Dominican Republic
Santa Cruz del Seibo is the administrative capital of El Seibo Province in the eastern Dominican Republic. The town sits at 117 meters above sea level and serves as the economic and administrative hub for the region.
The town was founded in 1502 by Spanish conquistador Juan de Esquivel and named after a Taino chief called Seebo from the Chiefdom of Higuey. These origins link European colonial history with the indigenous island population.
The town celebrates the feast of the Holy Cross from May 1 to May 10 with traditional bullfights and percussion music that reflect local identity. These celebrations show how residents blend religious observance with folk tradition.
The town provides all essential services for visitors and residents, including local shops and basic facilities. Its proximity to agricultural areas growing cocoa and raising livestock shows the economic importance of the surrounding countryside.
In the western sector of town stands the historical Asomante Cross, a remnant of the Spanish tradition of placing crosses at cardinal points. This monument shows an unusual example of this colonial practice that is rarely seen today.
