On November 25, 1960, three of the sisters were assassinated, making them symbols in the fight against tyranny.
November 25, now recognized as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, commemorates their deaths.
There's a museum dedicated to the sisters' lives and legacy located in their hometown Salcedo, Dominican Republic.
They are referred to as national martyrs in the Dominican Republic.
