Manzanillo Port, Maritime port in Monte Cristi Province, Dominican Republic
Manzanillo Port is a freight port in Monte Cristi Province, in the northwest of the Dominican Republic, positioned very close to the Haitian border. It handles bulk cargo and containers, serving both domestic and international shipping routes across the Caribbean.
The port was established in the 1950s by the Dominican Fruit Company to export bananas and other agricultural goods from the region. Over the following decades it shifted away from that single crop focus and grew into a general cargo facility.
The port sits close to the Haitian border, giving it a role in cross-border trade that shapes daily life in the surrounding area. Local fishing activity still takes place nearby, and the mix of small boats and cargo ships reflects how the waterfront is used by different communities.
This is an active working port, so access to the operational areas is restricted and visitors without a commercial purpose should expect limited entry. It is worth contacting port authorities in advance if you need access for any specific reason.
One of the port's main cargo types is clinker, the raw material used to make cement, which is shipped from here to markets in Europe. This specialization in a single industrial material sets it apart from most other ports in the Caribbean.
