Ted Smallwood Store
The Ted Smallwood Store is a historic building in Chokoloskee that originally served as a general store and post office and is still preserved with its original fixtures today. The simple wooden structure with shelves shows the basic setup of a trading post from the early twentieth century.
The store was founded in 1917 by C. S. Smallwood, who arrived on the island in 1897 and became the first postmaster in 1906. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and marks the early settlement of the Everglades region.
The store takes its name from the man who shaped the island and became its first postmaster. Visitors can see today how such a place functioned for early residents and what role it played in their daily life.
The building is easily reached via State Road 29 and has parking available right outside. Visitors should check opening hours in advance, as it is open during daytime but not every day of the week.
The area around the store is connected to local legends, including the story of a notorious outlaw called 'Bloody' Ed Watson who was active in the Everglades. These dark stories have given the area a mysterious reputation and draw people interested in Florida's unusual history.
