Maelstrom, Dark boat ride at Norway Pavilion in Epcot, Florida.

This attraction was a water ride at the Norway Pavilion in Epcot, Florida, carrying guests in Viking-style boats through Norwegian scenes with animated figures and waterfalls. The boats moved both forward and backward along the course, passing through several themed rooms with different landscapes.

The ride opened on July 5, 1988, and remained in operation for 26 years until it closed in October 2014. The space was then redesigned for the new attraction Frozen Ever After.

The loading-area mural painted many figures from Norway's history; look for a Viking whose helmet carries Mickey Mouse ears and a figure wearing a Mickey Mouse watch. Inside the stave church scene, King Olaf II had a small Mickey embroidered on his tunic near his right thigh. The exit film "The Spirit of Norway" showed skiing, hiking and Kjerag mountain.

The queue split into a FastPass return line and a stand-by entrance, with wait times posted on a digital display at the door. Riders boarded longships from a dock; the boats then climbed a lift hill into a dark tunnel. After the drop into the North Sea scene, guests could either leave directly or stay for the 5-minute 70mm film "The Spirit of Norway" shown in an adjoining theater.

The boats went through two drops including a descent of roughly 8.5 meters (28 feet) combined with a backward section. In this part trolls appeared to push the vessels through dark passages while sound effects and fog accompanied the scene.
