Stetson University, Private university in DeLand, Florida, US
Stetson University is a private institution in DeLand, Florida, spreading across 175 acres (71 hectares) with lecture halls, research centers, dormitories, and open grounds. The layout connects several zones with historic brick structures standing beside newer facilities, while lawns and pathways link the different academic departments.
The institution opened in 1883 as DeLand Academy and took its present name after receiving major funding from a hatmaker. Over the following decades it expanded through new faculties and programs in law, music, and business.
The campus carries the name of a 19th-century hatmaker whose business model funded the early growth of the institution. Students today attend classes in buildings that partly date back to the founding years and document how campus architecture has changed over more than a century.
Visitors can explore the buildings during term-time events or guided tours and should check operating hours for individual facilities in advance. The grounds are walkable, with pathways connecting the different faculties.
DeLand Hall, built in 1884, is the oldest building in Florida still continuously used for higher education. The brick structure still houses classrooms today and shows how teaching methods have evolved at a single site over more than a century.
