Republic Block, Commercial building in downtown Atlanta, United States.
Republic Block was a multi-story commercial building with brick facades and ornate architectural details at the corner of Pryor Street and Decatur Street in downtown Atlanta. It occupied a full city block and contained retail shops and offices across its upper floors.
The building was put up in 1873 by William Goodnow of the Republic Insurance Company, at a time when Atlanta was rebuilding and expanding after the Civil War. It stood as a commercial center for nearly 70 years until it was demolished in 1940.
The building brought together a wide range of traders and professionals under one roof, from hardware dealers and jewelers to the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. This mix made it a place where commercial and civic life overlapped in the heart of the city.
The building no longer exists, and the site is now part of the Georgia State University campus in downtown Atlanta. The area is easy to reach by public transit and can be explored on foot along with nearby streets.
The building stood directly across from the Kimball House hotel, one of the most talked-about hotels in the American South during the late 1800s. The 1886 Sanborn fire maps recorded its exact floor plan, making them one of the few surviving sources on how the building was laid out.
