Village Homes, Ecological residential development in Davis, California, United States.
Village Homes is a residential community in Davis, California, made up of houses, shared gardens, orchards, and a small commercial area. The grounds are flat and crossed by planted pathways that connect the different parts of the community.
The community was founded in the 1970s by Michael and Judy Corbett and completed in 1982. It grew out of a broader movement toward housing that took environmental concerns seriously from the start.
Community gardens and green spaces here are places where residents meet regularly to tend plants and share knowledge about growing food. These daily interactions around gardening create a strong sense of neighborhood connection.
Houses face north-south to make use of solar energy, while the streets run east-west, which gives the layout a clear and regular feel. The terrain is flat throughout, making it easy to walk from one end to the other without difficulty.
Rainwater here flows through natural channels dug into the ground rather than into drains, and is used to water the fruit trees and gardens across the site. This approach was new when the community was built and has since inspired similar projects in other parts of the world.
