Morgan Territory, Nature reserve in Contra Costa County, California, USA
Morgan Territory is a regional preserve covering more than 5,000 acres of rolling sandstone hills, seasonal creeks, and open grasslands near Mount Diablo. The terrain includes oak woodlands, chaparral, and coastal sage scrub that support diverse wildlife.
Jeremiah Morgan established a ranch here in 1857 after arriving from Alabama during California's Gold Rush era. The property was later converted to a public preserve to protect the rolling landscape.
The Volvon people, part of the Bay Miwok, lived on this land for thousands of years and shaped its character. Their heritage remains woven into the land itself today.
The preserve opens daily from early morning until late evening with free parking available throughout the grounds. Leashed dogs are welcome on all trails, making it accessible for visitors traveling with pets.
Over 90 wildflower species thrive here, including the Diablo sunflower found nowhere else in the world. This rare botanical abundance makes the preserve special for nature observers and photographers.
