Reed College, Liberal arts college in Southeast Portland, United States
Reed College is a liberal arts college in Southeast Portland, Oregon, set on a wooded campus with historic buildings in Tudor-Gothic style. A natural canyon runs through the grounds, forming a protected habitat in the middle of the academic facilities.
Simeon and Amanda Reed founded the college in 1908 as an alternative to eastern education models, with classes beginning in 1911. The founders wanted to create an institution that placed critical thinking and intellectual independence at the center.
The campus mascot is the griffin, a mythical creature combining lion and eagle, which appears in student traditions throughout the year. Students organize the annual Renn Fayre festival, a multiday celebration at the end of spring semester with music and community activities.
The campus sits about 2.5 miles (4 km) southeast of downtown Portland and is accessible by several bus lines. Visitors can walk through public parts of the grounds but should respect student privacy.
The college operates the only nuclear research reactor at a liberal arts institution in the United States, with 41 students serving as licensed operators. The research reactor supports teaching purposes and allows students hands-on experience in nuclear physics and radiation research.
