Maryhill Museum of Art

The Maryhill Museum of Art sits on a hillside overlooking the Columbia River and houses collections of European artworks alongside objects from traditional craftspeople. The building itself offers views of the river landscape and is surrounded by grounds that invite exploration.

A railroad businessman began construction of the house in 1914 as a private residence and later developed it into an art collection. In the 1920s, the collection became accessible to the public and artworks from various countries were added.

The museum displays works and objects representing different cultures, including traditional crafts and religious items from Eastern Europe. Visitors can see how various artistic traditions are presented side by side in the exhibition spaces.

The museum can only be visited during the warmer months, so planning a trip during spring through fall is necessary. The riverside location means the site can be windy, and warm layers are advised during shoulder seasons.

A Romanian queen visited the museum in the 1920s and contributed significant items to the collection, which remain on display today. This remarkable connection between a European royal family and this remote location surprises many visitors.
