Special Commitment Center, Treatment facility in McNeil Island, United States
The Special Commitment Center is a secure facility on McNeil Island offering mental health treatment for individuals who have completed their prison sentences. The site combines residential areas, treatment spaces, and administrative buildings across the island grounds.
Washington created this facility in 1990 under the Community Protection Act to house individuals with specific profiles for indefinite periods. It was the first program of its kind in the state to implement this form of civil commitment.
The center implements a treatment approach that combines mental health services, rehabilitation programs, and security measures to address both individual needs and community protection.
Visitors reach the island via ferry from Steilacoom, a journey of roughly 20 minutes, followed by supervised bus transport to the facility. The grounds are isolated, and access is limited due to security requirements.
Residents can work in various roles on the grounds and earn between one and three dollars per hour during their stay. This work opportunity is integrated into the treatment program and helps develop practical skills and daily structure.
