Summit Ski Area, Ski resort on Mount Hood, Oregon
Summit Ski Area is a ski resort on the slopes of Mount Hood in Oregon, with several runs served by lifts and terrain suited to different ability levels. The area sits near the small community of Government Camp, at an elevation that reliably holds snow through winter and into spring.
The area opened in 1927, making it one of the earliest organized winter sports sites in the Pacific Northwest. It grew steadily over the following decades while keeping its local character rather than expanding into a large commercial operation.
The ski area has long been a place where Oregon families introduce their children to snow sports, and many locals have their first memories of skiing here. Dedicated play zones on the property make it a common outing for families with very young children who are not yet on skis.
The resort is accessible by car via US Route 26, east of Portland, and Government Camp just nearby has lodging and food options. Rental equipment and lessons are available on-site, so visitors do not need to bring their own gear.
Mount Hood is one of the few mountains in the US where skiing is possible nearly year-round, and this resort benefits from that extended season. On some spring days, skiers come down the slopes in t-shirts while the snow is still firm enough to ski on.
