Mount Rainier, Active stratovolcano in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, US.

Mount Rainier rises 4,392 meters above sea level, featuring two volcanic craters at its summit and 26 major glaciers that feed multiple river systems.

Captain George Vancouver named the mountain in 1792 after Rear Admiral Peter Rainier, while Indigenous peoples called it Tahoma, meaning snow-covered mountain.

Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest consider Mount Rainier a sacred site, incorporating its presence into their traditions and oral histories.

Visitors must carry tire chains from November through May, and climbing permits are required for all attempts to reach elevations above 10,000 feet.

The mountain contains the most extensive glacier system in the continental United States, with ice caves formed by geothermal heat beneath the summit.
