Taft Correctional Institution was a prison complex in California's desert region with multiple buildings arranged for different security levels. The facility contained housing units, work areas, and administrative sections spread across its grounds.
The facility opened in 1997 as the first privately operated federal prison contracted by the Bureau of Prisons. It continued operating until its closure in April 2020.
The institution implemented educational programs and vocational training to prepare inmates for their return to society through skill development opportunities.
The facility was not open to walk-in visitors and tours needed to be arranged in advance. All visitors were required to undergo security screening before entering.
