Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Ski resort in Sierra Nevada mountains, California, United States
Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is a winter sports destination in the eastern Sierra Nevada range of California, covering roughly 3500 acres. The terrain spreads across 150 runs serviced by 25 lifts, rising to an elevation of about 11,000 feet (3350 meters) at the highest point.
Dave McCoy founded the operation in 1953, turning the eastern Sierra Nevada into a winter destination. His initiative brought organized skiing to a region previously known mostly for summer scenery.
The mountain's name comes from mammoth fossils found nearby, linking the location to prehistoric times. This connection to ancient life shapes how visitors see the area, adding a layer of natural history beneath the modern winter sports experience.
The season usually runs from November through May, with the terrain receiving an average of around 400 inches (10 meters) of snow each year. Conditions vary by elevation, so checking current snow reports before a visit helps plan the day.
During the winter of 2017, extraordinary snow conditions kept the slopes open from November until early August. This unusually long season made it one of the few places in the world where skiing continued for so many months in a single calendar year.
