Deep Springs College, Liberal arts college in Deep Springs, California, US.
Deep Springs College combines a higher education institution with a working ranch in an enclosed valley between the White Mountains and the Inyo Range. The facility includes seminar rooms, a library, student residences, and agricultural buildings spread across several hundred acres of pasture land.
Industrialist and electrical engineer L. L. Nunn founded the institution in 1917 following his experience with community projects in Colorado. The two-year structure has remained in place since then, with graduates transferring to universities such as Harvard, Yale, and Stanford.
The name Deep Springs refers to the natural springs that water this remote valley and make the ranch operations possible. Students cook their meals together, repair buildings, and make decisions in weekly meetings where every voice carries equal weight.
The institution lies about three hours' drive from Bishop and remains accessible to visitors only by prior arrangement. The elevation of around 1500 m (5000 ft) and the dry desert surroundings require proper preparation for travel to this remote area.
The institution has no permanent internet connection in residential buildings, which directs student attention toward direct conversation and physical books. The isolated location means the nearest grocery store is more than an hour's drive away.
