Nelson, Historic mining settlement in Clark County, Nevada.
Nelson is a former mining settlement in the Nevada desert located along Nevada State Route 165. The site features scattered buildings and mining remnants spread across the arid landscape, situated between Boulder City and the Colorado River region.
The Techatticup Mine operated from 1858 to 1945, extracting large quantities of gold, silver, copper, and lead through underground mining. The settlement grew around this mining operation and attracted workers seeking employment in the remote desert.
The area bears evidence of its mining heritage through preserved structures, old equipment, and documented accounts of the Civil War deserters who settled there.
The area is accessible only by private vehicle, and roads can become difficult to navigate after heavy rain. Visitors should bring adequate water and fuel, as services and shops are not available in the region.
The settlement had only 22 residents in 2020, making it one of the least populated census-designated places in Clark County. This sparse population gives the area a distinctly isolated character that reflects how desert communities have evolved over time.
