Owyhee, Native American settlement in Elko County, United States

Owyhee is a settlement spanning Nevada and Idaho within the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, situated in high desert terrain at approximately 1,643 meters elevation. The area includes several lakes and waterways that define its landscape and provide resources for local communities.

The reservation was established in 1877 through an executive order by President Rutherford B. Hayes, creating a protected space for Western Shoshone peoples. This founding marked a turning point for tribal communities to remain on their land and maintain their independence.

The Shoshone-Paiute communities preserve their traditions through fishing and stewardship of natural resources at local water sites within the reservation. These practices shape daily life and connect residents to the land they have inhabited for generations.

The settlement connects to Mountain Home, Idaho via State Highway 51 and to Elko, Nevada through State Route 225, with each route covering roughly 97 miles. Visitors should prepare for remote roads and allow adequate travel time, as the area has sparse population and limited services.

Mountain View Reservoir features a campground where individual campsites have electrical outlets, supporting both traditional and modern camping experiences. This infrastructure makes it a practical retreat for visitors wanting to enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing comfort.
