Fort McDermit, Military fort in northeastern Nevada, United States
Fort McDermit is a military outpost located near Quinn River Valley in northeastern Nevada. The complex features several structures arranged around a rectangular parade ground.
The fort was established in 1865 as Quinn River Camp No. 33 to protect stagecoach routes during conflicts with Native American tribes. After about 24 years of military service, it transitioned into an educational facility for the local population.
The place is closely tied to Northern Paiute and Western Shoshone communities who made their home here after the military left. Visitors can observe how the site transitioned from a military outpost to a gathering place for Indigenous people.
The site is located in a remote part of Nevada, so plan plenty of travel time to reach it. It is helpful to check accessibility ahead of time, as infrastructure in this area is limited.
An unusual feature is that the fort was strategically built at the crossroads between Nevada and Idaho Territory to control passage. This location made it a key point for monitoring trade routes and travel paths across the region.
