Mickey Hot Springs

Mickey Hot Springs, Geothermal hot springs in southeastern Oregon, United States.

Mickey Hot Springs is a cluster of thermal pools spread across a remote location in southeastern Oregon, featuring multiple basins with varying water temperatures and mineral content. The springs emerge from the ground with the largest pools being several meters across, while smaller vents and seeps dot the surrounding area.

The site gained attention in the 1990s when one of the pools began behaving like a natural geyser, shooting water upward with considerable force. This unusual behavior brought scientific interest to the location and made it known to visitors exploring Oregon's geothermal features.

Scientists conduct research on thermophilic bacteria colonies that form distinct color patterns based on water temperature variations throughout the springs.

The location is remote and requires driving on unpaved roads, so allowing extra time for the journey is necessary. Visitors should bring adequate water and fuel, and be prepared for dusty conditions and rough terrain that can make travel slower than expected.

The mineral deposits around the pools create a snow-like white appearance across the ground, which stands out starkly in the dry desert landscape. These white coatings form as hot water evaporates, leaving behind concentrated minerals that build up over time.
