Pole Creek Wilderness

Pole Creek Wilderness is a remote protected area in Owyhee County that spans high desert plateaus. Deep canyons cut through layers of red and black volcanic rock, with some of these gorges dropping several hundred feet.

The area became legally protected through federal legislation in 2009. A land management agency took responsibility for overseeing this wilderness landscape.

The area attracts visitors seeking solitude in remote terrain far from cities. The river currents provide adventure for experienced paddlers and water travelers.

Visitors need to bring enough water and food before entering, since there are no shops or services nearby. A reliable map or GPS is necessary to navigate through this roadless terrain.

This territory has the highest concentration of sheer volcanic canyons in western North America. These dramatic cliff formations resulted from thousands of years of erosion, making the landscape geologically unusual.
