Arctic Winter Games Arena, Indoor sports arena in Iqaluit, Canada
The Arctic Winter Games Arena is an indoor sports facility in Iqaluit, the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut, built around a full-size hockey ice surface and seating for around 2,500 spectators. In warmer months the ice is replaced with artificial turf, turning the floor into an indoor sports field.
The arena was originally built to host the Arctic Winter Games, an international sports competition for athletes from northern Canada and other circumpolar regions. Structural problems forced major repairs in 2009, which affected the ice-making systems and temporarily disrupted normal operations.
The arena is the main gathering space for Iqaluit residents, used for local hockey leagues, school events, and community gatherings throughout the year. Sports here feel less like entertainment and more like a shared routine that holds the community together.
The ice surface is generally in use from October through April, while artificial turf covers the floor from May through September, so what you find inside depends on the time of year. It is worth checking in advance to know which activities or events are scheduled during your visit.
The arena is one of the few venues this far north where international performers have taken the stage, a rarity given how remote Iqaluit is from standard touring routes. For many residents it is the only place within reach where large live events can happen.
