Aarbiwak, Mountain hut in Bernese Alps, Switzerland.
Aarbiwak is a mountain shelter perched at 2731 meters on a rock formation above the eastern section of Strahlegg glacier, where it meets the Finsteraar glacier. The building holds 17 sleeping spaces and provides basic equipment including blankets and dishes for visitors.
Built in 1976, the shelter has served climbers exploring the glacier regions of the Swiss Alps. Its establishment marked an important step in making this remote area more accessible to mountain explorers.
Climbers from around the world stop here to rest and share stories before continuing into the glacier region. The simple shelter creates a gathering place where people connect over their shared passion for mountain exploration.
Reaching this shelter requires about a 7-hour hike from Grimselhospiz following marked trails and moraine paths across glacial terrain with significant crevasses. Visitors should have alpine experience and be prepared for changing conditions at this elevation.
From this location, visitors see three major Alpine peaks in full view: Finsteraarhorn, Lauteraarhorn, and Schreckhorn. The position also allows regular observation of how the surrounding glaciers have shrunk over time.
