Sixshooter Peaks, Desert summit formation in San Juan County, United States

Sixshooter Peaks are two sandstone summits that rise as distinctive formations from the desert landscape in San Juan County. Each peak has different elevations and offers various climbing routes suited to different skill levels.

The formations took shape over millions of years through natural geological processes that created and shaped the sandstone. People have inhabited the region since ancient times and left their marks on the surrounding cliff walls.

The cliffs around this area show marks left by people who lived here long ago and made their home in the surrounding region. These visible traces remain part of the landscape that visitors can observe today.

The best time to visit is spring and fall, when the weather is more stable and temperatures are more comfortable. The area is quite remote, so bring plenty of water and proper equipment for your trip.

The two peaks get their name from their silhouette against the sky, which resembles two revolvers pointing upward from the desert. This unusual name comes from the similarity to an iconic symbol of the Wild West.
