Church Rock is a solitary sandstone column along U.S. Route 191 near Monticello, Utah, standing prominently beside the highway. The formation features distinctive vertical walls and rises significantly from the surrounding terrain, making it hard to miss while driving through the region.
The formation developed through natural erosion over millions of years, creating the distinctive shape visible today. In the 1940s, workers excavated an opening at its base to serve as storage space for cattle feed.
The formation is located near the former Home of Truth settlement, established in 1933 by spiritualist Marie Ogden and her followers.
This rock formation sits right along the highway and requires no hiking or special preparation to view and photograph. You can stop at the roadside to examine it up close or capture images from various angles throughout the day.
The sandstone formation rises to an elevation of 7,025 feet, featuring a distinct gumdrop shape that marks the landscape of San Juan County.
