Church Rock is a solitary sandstone column along U.S. Route 191 near Monticello, Utah, standing prominently beside the highway. The formation features distinctive vertical walls and rises significantly from the surrounding terrain, making it hard to miss while driving through the region.
History
The formation developed through natural erosion over millions of years, creating the distinctive shape visible today. In the 1940s, workers excavated an opening at its base to serve as storage space for cattle feed.
Culture
The formation is located near the former Home of Truth settlement, established in 1933 by spiritualist Marie Ogden and her followers.
