Chung Chi College, college of Chinese University of Hong Kong
Chung Chi College is a college within the Chinese University of Hong Kong, located in the Sha Tin District. The grounds include teaching buildings, student residences, research facilities, and a small chapel, all arranged across a hillside campus that slopes down toward the university lake.
The college was founded in 1951 by Christian missionary groups as a standalone school focused on Chinese studies. When the Chinese University of Hong Kong was formed in 1963, it became one of the founding colleges of the new institution.
The college name comes from classical Chinese thought and can be read as meaning 'central and higher learning'. This origin is still felt in the campus layout, where a small chapel sits alongside lecture halls, giving the place a calm and collected feel that sets it apart from other parts of the university.
The campus is easy to reach by train, as the University MTR station sits directly at its edge. The terrain is hilly, so comfortable shoes help, and it is worth allowing extra time to walk between the different building clusters.
Chung Chi College is the only college within the Chinese University of Hong Kong that has its own chapel on campus, a direct trace of its missionary origins in 1951. The chapel is open to visitors and is used today for a range of events beyond religious services.
