Palace Hotel, Heritage hotel on the Bund, Shanghai, China
Palace Hotel is a multi-story Renaissance-style building located along the famous Bund waterfront. Its facade features pointed arches, semi-circular windows, and detailed decorative carvings, particularly visible at the Nanjing Road entrance.
The building originated in 1854 as Central Hotel and underwent major transformation in 1903. During this renovation it received the first two electric elevators ever installed in Shanghai.
The building served as a gathering place for significant social events and hosted notable international guests throughout its operation. It reflects the cosmopolitan character that Shanghai developed as a major trading hub during that era.
The building now operates as an art hotel with exhibition spaces and guest rooms following its complete restoration in 2010. Its position directly along the Bund waterfront makes it easy to reach and offers clear views of the historic district.
The hotel runs an Artist in Residence program that has attracted more than 250 international artists who contribute works to its permanent collection. This ongoing program makes it an active center for contemporary art creation and cultural exchange.
