Glen Line Building, Historical multi-story building at The Bund, Shanghai, China.
The Glen Line Building is a seven-story structure at the Bund with a Renaissance-inspired granite facade on its lower two levels and reinforced concrete construction throughout. Its interior has been adapted for modern commercial use today.
Palmer and Turner designed this structure in 1922 for the Western Steamship Line Company during Shanghai's rapid growth as a port. It represents the peak of maritime trade activity in this quarter.
The building shows Western architectural influences that shaped Shanghai in the early modern period and reflect its role as an international trading hub.
The structure sits on the eastern bank of the Huangpu River in the heart of the Bund and is easily reachable on foot. You can photograph the exterior facade and explore the area, though the upper floors are not open to visitors.
The structure was originally designed to connect directly with shipping operations, with links to the ports below. This functional relationship between the building and maritime trade remains visible in how the exterior was planned.
