Jardine Matheson Building, Protected heritage building on The Bund, Shanghai, China.
The Jardine Matheson Building at East Zhongshan Road is a seven-story structure designed in the Beaux-Arts style with distinctive architectural details. The facade displays characteristic ornamental elements and proportions typical of early 20th-century international commercial buildings.
The building was constructed in 1922 by architects Moorhead and Halse, replacing an earlier English cottage from 1845. An additional floor was added in 1930, and modifications continued through the subsequent decades.
The sixth floor houses the Jiushi Art Museum, which exhibits collections reflecting Shanghai's commercial and artistic development through different periods.
The building sits in a central waterfront location with easy street access and ground-floor retail spaces visible from outside. The interior floors are primarily occupied by offices and cultural facilities.
The ground floor has housed a major luxury retail store since 2009, marking a shift from the building's original function as a trading company warehouse. This transformation reflects how Shanghai landmarks have evolved from international commerce bases into modern retail destinations.
