Metropolitan Courthouse, Judicial structure in downtown Albuquerque, United States

The Metropolitan Courthouse is a nine-story judicial building in downtown Albuquerque at the intersection of 4th Street and Lomas Boulevard. Its interior features a three-story rotunda finished with granite and marble, large courtrooms, and administrative offices.

Construction began in May 2001, and the building opened on January 20, 2004 as a modern judicial center. It replaced the previous courthouse that had stood at 4th and Roma.

The building displays a 36-foot sculpture depicting scales of justice that reflects core legal values. This artwork shapes the visual character and reminds visitors of the importance of the judicial system in daily life.

The building is easy to find downtown and has clear signage for visitors. You should expect longer wait times, especially when court sessions are taking place.

Between 2005 and 2009, the courthouse became the center of a major fraud investigation involving embezzled construction funds. This incident highlights challenges in managing large public projects.
