Abiquiu Dam, Embankment dam in Rio Arriba County, United States.
Abiquiu Dam is an embankment dam built across the Rio Chama that creates a large reservoir behind it. The structure serves multiple purposes including flood control, water storage for irrigation and municipal use, and hydroelectric power generation.
Construction of the dam began in 1956 under the US Army Corps of Engineers and was completed in 1963. The structure was later enlarged to increase its capacity and improve its operations.
Los Alamos County Department of Public Utilities manages the hydroelectric operations, supporting regional power distribution and water resource management.
The area around the dam and reservoir is generally accessible, with several viewing areas and recreational spots available. Plan your visit considering local conditions and any seasonal water level changes that affect access.
The reservoir has never reached its full capacity of 1,369,000 acre-feet, with its highest recorded level at 402,258 acre-feet in June 1987.
