Point of Rocks Stage Station State Historic Site, Stage station and historic site in Sweetwater County, US.
Point of Rocks Stage Station is a historic travel stop in Sweetwater County built from local sandstone blocks set with mud mortar. The structure sits along Bitter Creek in Wyoming and retains its original stone construction.
The station was built in 1862 and served as an important stop on the Overland Trail until 1868. The arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad changed travel patterns in the region and reduced its role in transportation.
Families shaped this place over time, using it as a home, store, school, and ranch center. These different purposes show how a single building could meet the needs of a growing community.
The site is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, located about half a mile south of Interstate 80 exit 130. Visitors should bring sun protection and wind gear since the landscape here is quite exposed.
The building is one of very few remaining stage stations from the Overland Trail era, preserving features from a time when travel required long stops. Visitors can see where people more than 150 years ago stopped to sleep and resupply for their journeys.
