Eisenhower Tunnel, Road tunnel in the Rocky Mountains, United States.

Eisenhower Tunnel is a road tunnel in the Rocky Mountains, United States, made up of two parallel bores that pass through the Continental Divide at an elevation of 11,158 feet (3,401 meters). Both bores sit on Interstate 70 and connect the eastern and western parts of Colorado.

Work on the westbound bore started in 1968 and it opened in 1973, while the eastbound bore was built between 1975 and 1979. Both were created to carry Interstate 70 through the Rocky Mountains and cut travel time between the two sides of Colorado dramatically.

The westbound bore honors Dwight D. Eisenhower, who championed the Interstate system, while the eastbound tube commemorates Edwin C. Johnson, a Colorado governor who supported the project. Both names celebrate political figures who pushed for highway construction through the Rocky Mountains.

Driving through the tunnel happens under dimmed lights, and speed limits may apply when traffic is heavy or weather conditions are difficult. Both bores remain open year-round but can close temporarily in winter if snowstorms or avalanche risks arise.

During construction, engineers encountered unexpected fault lines in the rock, which led to adjustments in building techniques and set new standards for high-altitude tunneling in North America. These discoveries helped later projects handle similar geological challenges more effectively.
