Green Mercantile Store, commercieel gebouw in Colorado, Verenigde Staten van Amerika
The Green Mercantile Store is a two-story commercial building constructed in 1898 in Aspen Park, Colorado, made from locally quarried granite blocks. The ground floor served as a general store selling everyday goods and supplies, while the upper floor functioned as a gathering space and housed the town post office at various times.
The building was constructed after a major fire in 1897 destroyed an earlier wooden structure that had operated since 1883 as a trading post. John W. Green, Sr. built this new granite structure and operated it as a mercantile business, while it also served as the town post office, which had been established in 1886.
The store carries the Green family name, marking generations of community ownership and involvement. It served as a social gathering place where townspeople exchanged news and built connections beyond simple commerce.
The building is accessible in Aspen Park's town center and sits alongside other shops and community spaces. Visitors should note that access between the two floors involves steep stairs, so the upper level may not be easily reached by everyone.
The granite blocks were so heavy that it took six men with a mule team and a special lifting device called a gin pole to position each stone during construction. This hands-on building method reveals how construction workers solved practical problems without modern machinery.
