Rooney Ranch

Rooney Ranch is a historic property near Morrison situated along the Dakota Hogback ridge, featuring stone structures that date to the mid-1800s. The complex includes the original residence, outbuildings, and working pastures set within the broader landscape of Jefferson County.

Alexander Rooney arrived from Iowa in 1861 and established this property through federal homesteading laws and subsequent land purchases in the region. The stone structures were built during the period of westward expansion and continue to shape the character of the site.

The ranch house reflects the building methods of settlers who arrived in the Colorado territory during the mid-1800s, using local stone and traditional construction. Visitors can see how families adapted to the landscape by constructing thick-walled structures that protected against the elements and harsh winters of the high plains.
