Colorado Amphitheater, Stone amphitheater near South Table Mountain in Golden, Colorado.
Colorado Amphitheater is a stone structure built into the base of South Table Mountain, featuring the distinctive architectural style of Works Progress Administration era construction. The seating areas are carved from natural stone and follow the slope of the landscape.
Built in 1935 according to designs by architect Frank J. Ardourel, the amphitheater served Camp George West of the Colorado National Guard. It was primarily used for military film screenings and garrison events.
The National Register of Historic Places recognized this Jefferson County landmark in 1993 for its contribution to local military heritage.
The site is now located within the National Renewable Energy Laboratory grounds, so access may be limited or require prior approval. It is advisable to check beforehand if the structure can be visited.
The structure gradually fell out of use as the surrounding area became home to rattlesnakes. Wildlife in the location now presents practical challenges for regular visits.
