Minam State Recreation Area sits along the Wallowa River in a forested valley with 22 primitive camping sites nestled among tall pine trees. The river runs through rocky terrain and provides opportunities for whitewater rafting and exploring the surrounding landscape.
Oregon State Parks purchased the land in stages between 1964 and 1984 from various private owners. This gradual expansion created a large public recreation area along the river.
Local anglers gather at the park during spring and fall seasons to participate in steelhead fishing activities along the Wallowa River.
Water is available seasonally from late May through September, with vault toilets located throughout the grounds. Visitors should prepare for basic conditions and bring their own supplies.
Bighorn sheep roam the surrounding valleys, a species rarely seen in accessible areas throughout the region. Bears, elk, and cougars also move through the forested zones, making this a spot where wildlife encounters are possible.
