Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge

Red Rock Lakes spans 53,000 acres of wetlands, forests, grasslands and sagebrush steppe at elevations between 6,600 and 10,000 feet in Montana.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established this refuge in 1935 to protect the last known breeding population of trumpeter swans in North America.

The refuge headquarters in Lakeview contains educational displays about local wildlife and maintains programs focusing on wetland habitat preservation.

Two primitive campgrounds provide basic facilities, with Upper Lake offering spring water and River Marsh positioned for optimal bird observation.

This refuge forms the largest wetland complex in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, supporting 230 bird species and providing corridors for grizzly bears.
