University of Montana, Research university in Missoula, United States
The University of Montana is a public research university in Missoula in the state of Montana with a campus area of about 220 acres. The buildings gather around the central lawn area called the Oval and display mostly Renaissance Revival styles with light brown and red brick walls.
A Congressional land grant founded the university in 1893 and the first classes took place at Willard School. The main campus was completed in several building phases starting from the first months after the founding.
The campus carries the official nickname Mountain Campus and many buildings show elements of classical architecture with red brick walls. The university works closely with the Salish and Pend d'Oreille communities and students can experience indigenous languages and traditions in everyday campus life.
Students can use Mountain Line buses and late-night campus shuttles for free and borrow bicycles. The campus is easy to reach on foot and by bike from several neighborhoods.
Memorial Row shows evergreen trees and markers from 1919 in memory of university members who died in World War I. The trees were planted by the families and friends of students and faculty.
