Bugaboo Spire, Granite mountain summit in Purcell Mountains, British Columbia, Canada.
Bugaboo Spire is a granite summit in the Purcell Mountains of British Columbia, Canada, rising steeply from the surrounding glaciers with sharp, vertical rock faces. The mountain has several technical climbing routes, each requiring solid mountaineering skills and appropriate gear.
The first ascent of Bugaboo Spire took place in 1916, led by guide Conrad Kain with Albert and Bess MacCarthy and John Vincent reaching the top. That climb placed the mountain firmly on the map of Canadian mountaineering and drew more climbers to the area in the following decades.
The mountain draws experienced climbers from across North America seeking difficult granite routes in a remote setting. The place has become a destination where mountaineers test themselves against demanding technical challenges.
Access to the mountain starts from within Bugaboo Provincial Park, where climbers hike up to the Conrad Kain Hut, which serves as the main base for routes on the peak. Booking a spot at the hut in advance is strongly recommended, as space is limited and demand is high during the climbing season.
Reaching the base of the climbing routes requires crossing crevassed glaciers, so the approach itself calls for glacier travel skills before any rock climbing begins. This means that even experienced rock climbers need to be comfortable on ice and snow before attempting a route here.
