Jumbo Glacier, Alpine glacier in Purcell Mountains, British Columbia, Canada
Jumbo Glacier is an alpine glacier in the Purcell Mountains situated at roughly 1,700 meters (5,600 feet) elevation within the Columbia range. The site features hiking trails and functions as a critical wildlife corridor for grizzly bears moving between major mountain systems.
The glacier received its name in 1890 from a nearby mining claim, which was named after a famous circus elephant. This naming reflects a time when the region attracted mining interests searching for resources in the mountains.
The location holds deep meaning for the Ktunaxa Nation, who established a protected conservation area here in 2020. This designation reflects how the region has shaped the identity and practices of the Indigenous community that has inhabited these mountains.
Visitors should prepare for changing mountain weather conditions and bring sturdy equipment when exploring the area. It helps to check local conditions and wildlife safety guidelines before heading out, as conditions can shift quickly in high elevation terrain.
The area was nearly transformed into a massive ski resort development, but a government buyout in 2020 redirected it toward conservation instead. This shift illustrates how land use priorities can change dramatically through political and environmental decisions.
