John Lineham and his partners established the Rocky Mountain Development Company, drilling through 1024 feet of rock to extract 8000 barrels of oil.
The site represents the start of petroleum exploration in Western Canada, leading to significant industrial changes throughout the Alberta province in the 20th century.
Located along Akamina Parkway, visitors can reach the historic monument by following marked paths within Waterton Lakes National Park boundaries.
The well produced 300 barrels of oil daily during its peak before mechanical issues and debris accumulation caused its permanent closure in 1904.
