First Oil Well in Western Canada, Oil well national historic site in Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada.

This site features a monument shaped like an oil derrick at the location where petroleum was first discovered in 1902. The structure stands along Akamina Parkway within Waterton Lakes National Park.

In 1902, the Rocky Mountain Development Company led by John Lineham drilled the first successful oil well in Western Canada. Production ceased after just a few years due to mechanical failures and equipment damage.

This site marks the beginning of oil extraction in Western Canada and became a turning point for regional development. Visitors can reflect on how this discovery shaped the economic future of the entire region.

The monument is easily reached via marked trails branching from Akamina Parkway throughout the park. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the path crosses natural terrain.

At its peak, the well pumped around 300 barrels of oil each day, making it one of the most productive early operations in the region. This success story came to an abrupt end when sediment clogged the system and repairs became impossible.
