TD Canada Trust Tower, Postmodern skyscraper in Calgary, Canada
The TD Canada Trust Tower is a 41-storey postmodern office tower at 421 7th Avenue SW, rising 162 metres above a four-level retail podium that forms part of The Core Shopping Centre. WZMH Architects designed it and PCL Construction built it in 1991; 15 elevators serve its 65,000 square metres.
The tower opened in 1991, replacing a former Eaton's department store that occupied the site from 1929. WZMH Architects designed this commercial building during Calgary's period of economic expansion and urban development.
The tower is named for anchor tenant TD Canada Trust and was formerly Eaton Centre Tower, after the Eaton's store that stood on the site from 1929 to the 1980s. Tenants include TD Securities, Macquarie Group, Apache Corporation and McCarthy Tetrault. The four-level podium is The Core Shopping Centre, managed by 20 VIC Properties.
The building is easily accessible from Calgary's downtown area, with parking available nearby and good public transit connections. Ground-level shops and services in the retail section provide convenient amenities for visitors passing through.
The retail podium incorporates original walls from the former Eaton's store, creating a subtle link between the building's past and present. This preservation approach shows how modern development can honor what came before.
