Knox United Church, Gothic Revival church building in downtown Calgary, Canada
Knox United Church is a place of worship featuring Gothic Revival architecture constructed from local reddish sandstone in downtown Calgary. The building displays long wall buttresses, large pointed-arch windows, and carefully laid stone masonry that came from quarries near the city.
The congregation was founded in 1883 and constructed the current building between 1912 and 1913 based on designs from local and Boston architects. This period marked a time of growth for Calgary, when the city needed new religious structures.
The church serves as a cultural landmark where the community gathers for music performances and worship services throughout the year. The building itself reflects the spiritual traditions of the congregation and remains an important meeting place for local residents.
The building is open to visitors on weekdays with staff available at specific times to provide assistance and answer questions. Plan enough time for a leisurely walk through the interior to appreciate the windows and architectural features.
The building houses three dozen stained glass compositions installed between the 1920s and 1960s, showing artistic craftsmanship techniques from that era. One special window was created as a memorial for soldiers from the First World War and came from a well-known glassmaker based on the East Coast.
